Colette Penny Dress Hack

I found finally time last week to sew my first garment of the year, about time too, because I have been making sewing plans since forever 🙂. This one is a sleeveless shirt using the bodice of the Colette’s Penny shirt dress pattern. I loved the pattern as soon as I got notification, and I’ve been wanting to sew it but kept holding back because I have other shirt dress patterns. It wouldn’t stop tempting me though, so, I finally bit the bullet and downloaded the pattern some days ago.

As I didn’t have any fabric that would be just enough without remnants, this Kaftan I made last year that I didn’t like and never wore, came to mind, so I took it apart. The fabric is 100% cotton wax by Vlisco Hollandais which was originally my mum’s and it’s about 15 years young.

The reclaimed Kaftan on its own was not enough, so I gathered every scrap I could find making pattern matching impossible. I used the bodice from Penny pattern and extended the lines based on my measurements. The instructions were clear and I mostly followed them save for the yoke because I used my preferred way which I find more straightforward. I also omitted interfacing the yoke facing as I didn’t think it necessary.

All in all, this was a very enjoyable make, and I really love the finished shirt; no gaping armholes and a really cute little collar.

Things are going on slower than usual on the knitting front mainly because my current WIPs are too warm for this season, and I have no great desire to cast on a more appropriate knit as I have sufficient Spring/Summer shop-bought knitwear. What my knitted wardrobe really needs is a woollen gilet I can wear on cool mornings, which will not be a burden on my commute home when it’s usually very warm. If I don’t see a suitable pattern by the time I cast off my Carbeth cardigan, I’ll consider hacking my current one. For now, it looks like there’ll be more sewing than knitting contents for some time.

Till next time, thanks for stopping by.

  1. I love your new shirt! It fits you perfectly! What a great idea to use the nice fabric in your kaftan that wasn’t perfect for you to make this shirt that you’ll wear often. You’ve inspired me to look in my closet and see what I can remake into a new garment!
